A prayer on behalf of those
who speak to listen (Extroverts)
Beloved God of many voices
act kindly toward my incessant chatter,
those squealing disharmonies
hideously slithering
from within the writhing nest of eels
inside my brain.
Act kindly, Beloved,
toward the shambling Tevye of my faith
that listens by nattering
more than stillness in the morning,
more than stillness in the morning.
Did I repeat myself?
Act kindly Beloved,
toward my noisy cohort
those of us alien to silence, stillness and prayer;
a broken circuits inside
sparks noise with no light,
and we are easily lost in any darkness
without you.
Act kindly Beloved,
toward our poor untethered lot,
those of us who awkwardly look back
over our shoulders
into a mirror without reflection.
We are not graceful like the others,
the ones standing egret-like
peering out from inside their introverted silence.
Be kindly Beloved,
and cast no aspersions
or any cruel tease upon us,
for we are those who speak
in order to listen.
Enter our words instead – a meteor to earth in flames:
explode, crackle, unleash
crisp sounds of unexpected light.
Turn us into electric confabulations
stunning those around us
with our unexpected wisdom,
astonishing our own emptiness
with strange, unbegotten substance.
We will hear you, Beloved,
in the noise we make
so speak up
and often.
Amen. Amen.
Amen.
