“You ain’t no Muslim, Bruv!” is the phrase that went viral after an apparently Muslim by-stander shouted it at a lone, knife-wielding attacker in the London subway. (http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2015/12/07/458777087/response-to-london-subway-knife-attacker-you-aint-no-muslim-bruv). It is our turn to say it:

To Donald Trump: “You ain’t no Christian, Bro!”

To Jerry Falwell, Jr.: “You ain’t no Christian, Bro!”

To Ted Cruz: “You ain’t no Christian, Bro!”

To any of the loudmouth public figures espousing fascists, hate-mongering sludge from the depths of their narcissistic, totally self-orbiting campaigns to draw attention, power, and money to themselves at the expense of their own humanity and ours.

“You ain’t no Christians, Bros!”

Please, please, do not let any of your friends, neighbors, co-workers, or family members get away with fear mongering about Muslims or adherents of any religion based upon the actions of those that openly violate the precepts of that religion in such extreme and wanton fashion.

Most of us do not have much influence upon public figures but we do have significant influence upon those we live and work and play with, so when we speak up and challenge ignorant and fear-laden prejudices then we make a difference. It is when no one speaks up that the public discourse slips away from us and the darkness of heart, and those with darkened hearts, take over.

Stop it now.

Speak up. Do not tolerate for even five seconds the putrid rhetoric of exclusion, hatred, jingoism, or exclusivistic nationalism. We may never know what we prevented with our efforts but if we make no effort we will come to know a great and awful tragedy.

Sermons, and preaching as an art, are not for dispensing content or proclaiming doctrines and dogma. Like poetry, prose, and music, they are for provoking and inspiring thought, memory, and imagination within those receiving them. Please allow your thoughts to wander as they will in response to what you hear, rather than following along word for word.
